Akuma trailer shown for Street Fighter 6, set for release on May 22nd

With the arrival of Akuma appearing to draw ever closer for Street Fighter 6, we were finally treated to a full trailer showcasing the fan favorite character at Evo Japan 2024.

Not only did we get to see him in action, we also got to find out when we get to play as Akuma — and the day is May 22nd.

The trailer showcases a lot of Akuma’s classical moves along with some new exciting additions and as you’d expect from such a character, his arsenal looks loaded with tons of fun tools, with demon flip shenanigans, airborne supers and teleports all part of his kit.

He also comes with a brand new stage called Enma’s Hollow, an ominous place very well-fitting for our resident demonic Satsui no Hado-wielder in Street Fighter.

It also seems that Akuma will be the first character in the game to have more than 3 Super Arts at his disposal, showcasing the classical Raging Demon at the end of his trailer being separate from his regular Level 1, 2 and 3 Super Arts, though it’s unclear if you need to fulfill any special conditions in order to use it. He also appears to be able to use his Level 1 super, the Messatsu Gohado both on the ground and in the air.

Although Akuma’s new look is definitely demonic and imposing, if you prefer his classic look you don’t have to worry as the trailer also showcases that Akuma will be releasing with a nostalgia costume available which makes him look like you remember him from older titles.

The update to his Tatsu from Street Fighter 5, wherein he actually travels upwards a bit while performing a few extra kicks, returns along with the updated version of his Goshoryuken that sees him finish with a devastating downward blow to return his foe to the ground.

As is almost always the case with returning characters, Akuma has himself a new technique or two. In the trailer we see him use his trademark teleport (which doesn’t appear to travel as far as it has in the past) to avoid one of Ryu’s Dragon Punches.

After the evasion, Akuma launches forward with a similar animation, but goes into what looks like a command grab. This appears to be some sort of a special move version of his iconic Raging Demon (which pops up at the end, so don’t click away before you see it) as he proceeds into a cinematic combo that ends with a sudden teleport into a spike.
