ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. — It’s official. Amazon is coming to St. Joseph County.
The $11 billion Amazon campus that is coming to our area will be the largest capital investment in the state’s history.
St. Joseph County officials say this project is set to bring enormous economic growth to both New Carlisle and the county.
The project will bring a total of 1,000 jobs when it’s completed.
With the town losing several downtown businesses in the last year– officials say this will help reinvigorate the area.
The $11 billion project is the largest capital investment in the history of Indiana and the site will be just a few minutes outside of New Carlisle.
The jobs created will be high-paying and long-term, it will ultimately bring more people to the area along with creating more revenue for the county to invest in the town, as well.
The town of New Carlisle is set to see a lot of growth.
County officials say there was some push back early in the process but they’re working with locals on their concerns.
“The community could look at this as a challenge or it can look at it as an opportunity, and I think that’s where the community, a lot of the community is, and now they see this as an opportunity,” said Carl Baxmeyer, St. Joseph County Commissioner.
As for overall county growth, officials say the Amazon Data Center is set to bring in millions on an annual basis and that’s unprecedented for the county.
“We haven’t seen this kind of investment and so when we look at the total aggregate of what this will bring in its millions of dollars in positive investments on the tax side on, you know a yearly basis,” said Bill Schalliol, Director of Economic Development.
County officials say they couldn’t be more excited for this project, as it’s been in the works for months and now they can finally share the excitement with the community.
“This is a single largest investment in Indiana history as the governor noted in his release, so we are ecstatic over this. When we use the term transformational, it really is transformational for this county,” said Baxmeyer.
Officials say they’ve already broken ground on the north side of the campus and it will be operational this year.
The purchase of the south plot of land is still pending, county officials say it will go through in about two weeks. That’s when they can start construction on the next phase of the center.
“Their build out schedule will be pretty rapid as they have a large customer base. They’re putting all of their money and time and effort into moving this project forward so we will see a lot of investment very quickly,” said Schalliol.
County officials say they’re excited they can finally share the news with the community.
