Apple Announces Pencil Pro, a New Stylus With Haptic Feedback and New Gestures

Apple Pencil is going Pro as the tech giant unveiled that the stylus is getting a new “Pro” variant, offering haptic feedback and new gestures.

As part of its Let Loose hardware event, Apple unveiled that the Apple Pencil now includes haptic feedback support for the first time in the accessory’s history. Adding haptics to the stylus will provide a more natural experience for those who use it for note-taking or artistic purposes.

More interestingly, Apple revealed a new “squeeze” gesture in the 2024 Apple Pencil, allowing users to perform actions like adding shapes or text onto the canvas much more quickly than what was previously offered.

This is the first time the Apple Pencil has recieved a “Pro” variant. It is also the fourth overall product in the Apple Pencil lineup following the release of an entry-level Apple Pencil last October, which included a USB-C port in the stylus. However, it lacked key features found in previous versions, such as pressure sensitivity and wireless charging.

Apple confirmed that the Apple Pencil Pro will work on both the newly-announced iPad Pro and iPad Air models. This is the second iPad-focused accessory that was also announced, with the Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro that includes function keys, in addition to a larger trackpad.

The Apple Pencil Pro will cost $129, with preordering beginning today with availability starting next week.
