Apple announced yesterday that it will be hosting its highly anticipated WWDC 2024 event on June 10 to announce iOS 18 and a bunch of other updates for its entire product line. We have previously covered that WWDC 2024 will be special this year as it will be the perfect venue for Apple to announce its long-rumored AI features to the world for the iPhone, Mac, iPad, and additional products. However, Apple will not launch its own ChatGPT-like chatbot with the release of iOS 18 later this year.
Apple will rely on its partnership with OpenAI, Google, and Baidu for an AI-powered chatbot in iOS 18
It was previously discovered that the company is in talks with Google, OpenAI, and China’s Baidu to bring their generative AI technology to the iPhone. While the final details related to the deals between the companies are scarce, the company will not bring its custom chatbot with iOS 18. Apple is seeking generative AI-powered chatbots for the iPhone running iOS 18 from Google and OpenAI, but the company’s own chatbot has been ruled out as part of the platform until further notice.
Note that these are mere speculations, and Apple could surprise us with its own chatbot at its WWDC 2024 event as it announces iOS 18 with a plethora of AI-centric utilities for the iPhone. The details were shared by prominent industry analyst Mark Grman from Bloomberg, suggesting that AI will be the highlight of the event for the forthcoming software updates.
Other than a ChatGPT or Google Gemini-like chatbot, iOS 18 is also slated to bring a boatload of design changes and new additions to the table. We are expecting the company to upgrade Siri with AI capabilities, which will finally allow it to compete better against the likes of Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and ChatGPT’s voice-based assistant.
Apple is also working to enhance the Spotlight Search on the iPhone with generative AI technology, which will make it easier for users to make searches on the device as well as the web right from the Home Screen. However, we are not familiar with the exact feature sets that will be part of iOS 18, but it would make sense for the company to upgrade the iPhone’s capabilities in a similar manner.
While Apple is late to the AI game, it remains to be seen how it offers its own rendition of the technology and how it plans to execute it by devising proper use cases. So far, we have heard that the company also plans to bring the AI technology to the iPhone through its stock apps, including Messages, Apple Music, Notes, Pages, Numbers, Keynotes, and more.
