The Quest 2 is about to become a bit more desirable, as Meta announced today that it is permanently slashing the price of its popular standalone VR headset.
In a blog post, Meta announced that the Quest 2 128GB model will now permanently be priced at $199. This is the most recent price adjustment to the 128GB Quest 2 model since it debuted in June 2021 for $299. Though this is the first permanent price cut this particular model has received, nearly a year ago, Meta announced it was marking up the price of both Quest 2 storage configurations, with the 128GB model increasing from its debut price of $299 to $399.99.
The Meta Quest 2 was released in October 2020 and quickly became a dominant piece of hardware in the virtual reality market. Less than a year after its release, Meta revealed that the Quest 2 had already outsold every other Meta (then known as Oculus) VR headset combined.
Despite the Quest 3 quickly approaching its one-year anniversary, Meta has been adamant over the last several months that it will continue to support the Meta Quest 2 after the Quest 3 launch. Still, the company has not provided a firm timeline for how long it will continue supporting the almost four-year-old headset.
While the Quest 3 has more to offer, such as mixed reality support and a bump in specs, the Quest 2 is still desirable, depending on the player’s intent to use the headset. Considering that the Meta is not planning to make Quest 3-exclusive games soon, for those looking for a good entry point in VR without buying a particular game console or a VR-ready PC, $199 is not a bad price for the Quest 2.
