Where To Get ‘Dragon’s Dogma 2’s Unmaking Arrow, Which Kills In One Hit, But Instantly Autosaves

I swear, every day I learn something new and utterly insane about Dragon’s Dogma 2, but this one probably takes the cake at this point, which is really saying something considering we just talked about a disease that makes your pawn slaughter entire towns.

That would be the “Unmaking Arrow,” an ultra-rare item in Dragon’s Dogma 2 whose description reads as follows:

“The ultimate arrow, said to kill instantly. (Note: Once fire, the game will automatically save, so choose your moment with due care).”

Yes, that parenthetical, fourth wall-breaking note is literally in there. And like so many things in Dragon’s Dogma 2, there are no takebacks. You shoot that arrow, you kill something with it (or miss?) it’s gone. So yes uh, choose with due care.

Players have confirmed that you can indeed one shot the final boss of the entire game with the arrow. You can shoot the Sphinx in her wing (not in her human parts) and she will die. There is a counterfeit version of the Unmaking Arrow called the Unmasking Arrow, though I don’t think it does the reverse and kills you when fired (feel free to try).

So, where do you get this thing? Two places, for two uses.

  • You can buy one Unmaking Arrow for eight Wyrmslife Crystals from the Dragonforged at the Way Bayside Shrine to the north of Bakbattahl.
  • You can solve the Sphinx’s Riddle of Recollection, which requires you to carry a number of statues to the Sphinx that corresponds to the number of riddles you’ve done so far.

Maybe there are more hidden ones, but I haven’t heard of any more just yet. You’re supposed to equip the arrow and use Steady Shot to aim and shoot your target, likely some giant boss, but again, don’t miss. The game will autosave when the arrow is fired automatically, so you can’t reload the game if you change your mind. Though I suppose you could get around this with an Inn Save, though that may not be conducive to your current point in the game, and may require a lot of backtracking. Killing Gigantus with the arrow will give you an actual achievement in the game.

This is…I can’t even find the words. Really pure genius on the part of the developers here. Sure, we’ve seen one-hit ultra-powerful weapons in games before, but one that autosaves when you use it in a game with no separated save files? Incredible stuff. I need to get one of these and stress about when to use it for the next 60 hours.
